The designers behind ZeeBaan Design have built their bag-making business on a firm appreciation and respect for the leather hide they work with. They designed this hand-made soft leather clutch to complement the hide’s individual characteristics such as uneven colour, blemishes and shading.
ZeeBaan Design had ordered a batch of leather from a Kenyan tannery to create a line of travel bags, however, when the leather arrived, it had “gold effects” they had not requested. Although, the leather wasn’t as requested, Yonathan, one part of the husband-wife team that started the company in 2010, noticed the leather’s potential and worked hard to make the most of it.
Yonathan drew an analogy on working with leather to how designers work on kitenge and kanga material: “They have to follow the pattern so it doesn’t look odd… Leather is the same thing, you need to see and feel where exactly you want to cut and take the pattern from.” Yonathan goes on to explain that what makes this purse even more special is that it was constructed out of several pieces of leather but it was hand-stitched in such a careful and precise way that you cannot tell where stitching “starts or ends”.
