Artist Jackie Karuti was looking for a backpack, but not just any backpack. “I needed a durable canvas and leather backpack that I could put all my stuff [in] but still look funky”. So she designed her ideal bag in collaboration with Chebet Mutai, the owner of WazaWazi, a leather bag and accessories brand. This collaboration between artist and designer made perfect sense, seeing that Chebet defines her products as “functional leather art”.
The design of the Karuti Canvas Backpack has changed slightly over time with various improvements or what Chebet calls “positive evolutions”. For example, in order to make “every pocket count”, especially for clients who carry electronic equipment, the press button on the back pocket has been replaced with a buckle so it doesn’t pop open.
