This brass necklace from the accessories brand Kihuruta was inspired by designer Mukami Ruoro’s fascination with the repeat pattern in beehives. Now in her fifth and final year studying veterinary science at the University of Nairobi, Mukami can often be found working on her designs between classes.
Mukami started making jewellery after she completed her A-Levels because she wanted to wear jewellery that was unique. At the time it seemed, to her, that everyone in Nairobi was wearing similar designs. Her friend and fellow designer Anthony Mulli encouraged her to start and gave her a pair of pliers to get going.
This ‘Beehive Necklace’ started off as a sketch of a “cartoon-like beehive’’, which Mukami then worked into a necklace design. Mukami took the design to one of the brass artisans she works with in Kibera to effect the design.
