Given the prominence of khanga material in Christine Mhando’s designs, it should come as no surprise that she loves to go khanga shopping. “The best thing for me is finding the perfect khanga with beautiful print which has a really good saying. But that doesn’t happen often, it happens once in a blue moon. So to have both is 100% perfect.”
And this is what happened when she found this khanga with a big hibiscus flower and the proverb: Mungu tupe salama tuishi kwa kupendana. This khanga served as the basis for Chichia’s Autumn/Winter 2015/16 collection. The designer gave us an insight into how this collection evolved from this single khanga at the ‘Kikulacho Ki Nguoni Mwako’ fashion/art installation held in collaboration with the online concept store Ichyulu.
This khanga design was mixed in with other fabrics such as jersey and while the designs in the collection are incredibly diverse they are all connected by the hibiscus design.
