When stylist Eve Mungwe got married on Saturday 9 April, 2016, at Dari in Karen she did so in a bespoke wedding dress by Miss Angelsmile, the brand founded by designer Wambui Kibue in 2006. When Eve came to Wambui with photos and ideas of what her dress would look like, the one thing she was sure of was that she didn’t want a white dress.
Wambui found some material samples and Eve “totally fell in love” with this pink lace. So much so, that Eve bought it almost five months before her wedding day. Wambui sketched out designs and the two discussed concepts and silhouettes. “I loved the collaboration, it was so much fun,” Eve says, before adding, “I am not sure if that’s because I am a stylist”.
Towards the end of January, the actual making of the dress began and the final fitting was in March. Wambui works with a group of tailors but she hand-stitched the flower applique because she had a very specific vision of what she wanted it to look like.
The full-length dress reflected Eve’s simple elegance and style.
As conversation about the dress was drawing to a close Eve told me adamantly, “I really want people to know that they can make their dress here [in Kenya].” Of her own wedding dress by Miss Angelsmile she says, “It was beautiful, beyond beautiful and comfortable… it really was my dream dress”.
