With Nyumbani Design, Kerry Glanfield has created more than a jewellery brand. From the thoughtful and responsible use of raw materials, to the exquisite lookbooks, gorgeous stands at trade shows, and stunning newsletters (yes, newsletters!), Nyumbani Design is a wonderful immersive experience.
Kerry graduated with first class honours from the University of the West of England and for a few years she worked with high-end brands in London before moving to Dar es Salaam in 2010. She first came to Tanzania about eight years ago with a friend who was working on a documentary.
After visiting a few times, Kerry decided to move to Tanzania because “… I thought it was a cool place and wanted an adventure …” She had visited Moshi and Arusha, but Kerry settled in Dar because, having grown up in the Caribbean, she felt at home by the sea.
In Tanzania Kerry identified a gap in the market and therein an opportunity. In an interview with the online concept store Ichyulu she explains, “while wooden sculptures were commonplace in Tanzania, there was an absence in the market for crafting indigenous wood in a more contemporary fashion. Sensing there was an opportunity to experiment with a material I hadn’t explored before, I sampled a few pieces with local wood artisans to create wearable pieces of art that I would want to wear.” In 2012 Kerry formally launched Nyumbani Design.
To date the brand has produced eight collections, each carefully conceptualised and beautifully executed. The recently launched ‘Molecular Matter’ collection explores “the synthesis of art and science” as it “complements the body by adorning and enhancing the presentation of shapes, space and colours”.
Nyumbani Design works with locally sourced wood and donates to a conservation initiative that plants trees the community can sustainably harvest and benefit from. In the early stages of development for each collection Kerry carefully selects the grain and wood. Each piece is then hand-sculpted by incredibly talented Tanzanian craftsmen.
