One of the great things about online concept store Ichyulu is the designers from across the continent the brand has introduced to us in Nairobi. In January, the British-Tanzanian brand Chichia; in July, the Cape Town-based accessories brand Pichulik; and this month A A K S, a Ghanaian brand founded by Akosua Afriyie-Kumi.
A A K S expertly fuses traditional weaving with modern styles and techniques, and Akosua spent a year working with weavers and experimenting with colour and shapes before producing A A K S’ first collection.
From its base in Ghana, A A K S bags are made from raffia, a fiber obtained from the leaves of the raffia palm. The raffia is dyed using a sophisticated dyeing process formulated by A A K S to create their vibrant colour palette. On average it takes about one week to make each A A K S bag.
